Great end to a wonderful summer series

Hawaiian shirts, cats, giant squirrels, and Ron Burgundy (Drew Hogg) made appearances at the last short track of the summer. Aaron Bouplon raced in his "skin suit" too. It was a fun evening in wonderful sunny weather (aside from a few short rain drops), enjoying delicious hot dogs from Chuck of Full Cycle.

To top things off, Peter and Chris designed an incredible course that covered the entire area, weaving back and forth, up and down every berm...on and on, with laps ranging between 4 and 5 minutes. Race results are up, both daily and overall results. The overall scores were counted by dropping the 2 lowest scores for each racer.

A huge thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors that made this summer such a success, including Justin's Nut Butter, the International Mountain Bike Association, Mix 1, and of course Full Cycle. Even more, thanks to all you riders for coming out week after week to support the series! We'll see you all next summer!

One Race Left!

The rain held off last week for 111 racers to take the starting line. Joe Goodacre took another win, this time in one of the biggest kids fields yet - 23 racers. Mike Bachman also followed up last week with another win in the C's. Check out the day's results here. Be sure to check the Total Standings as well to see how close some of the overall battles are.

In celebration of a great summer, we're declaring this Wednesday as a Costume Party! We'll have prizes for best costume in each race category. Just be sure the costume won't get tangled in the chain or brakes.

Retro Fun

Sadly, no pennyfarthings made an appearance, but some racers were sporting some classic jerseys. We saw Vinn Hludzinski in Thor Hushovd's World Champion's Jersey, Wayne Smith in some Team USA shorts, and Ralph Hart racing in a 1984 CU Cycling Jersey, back when the colors were blue and gold, just our 2nd year in existence! We had some great 80's music going all night too, including some fun movie-theme songs. Oliver Hart was the first to correctly identify Beverly Hills Cop as the movie for one of our songs, winning a water bottle; he informed us Axel F. is one of his favorite all time songs.

Peter O'Donnell and Chris Baddick designed the course for this week, starting off on a very fast straightaway, and plenty of tight turns throughout the rest of the lap. Even the kids course was super technical. There were a couple of crashes, but only a little blood and plenty of fun. Mike Bachman cruised to another Men's C win, about 25 seconds ahead of John Bliss. Eric Collins won in similar style in the Men's B's. Unfortunately lightning closed us down for the Women's A's and Men's A's. For all those A riders who registered but didn't get to race, your registration will go forth to next week.

The weather's been great, not too hot, not too cold, and rain mostly holding off. Ksenia Lepikhina has not only closed the gap in the Women's A's overall, she's taken the lead from Erin Huck by 4 points! We've got tight battles going on in other categories too. Check out all the results we finally put up: July 13, July 20 and the Overall.

As the summer starts to wind down, we're gonna mix it up a bit these last few weeks. This Wednesday, we wanna see some retro! We'll give out prizes to the best retro bike, the best retro jersey, and the best retro costume. We don't recommend a Schwinn Varsity or Pennyfarthing for the course, but show them off by the tent, and race on your Fisher Joshua, in your Molteni jersey or your costume from Saturday Night Fever!

Rain couldn't stop the fun!

The timing of Boulder summer weather is rough...The afternoon downpour came at 4:30, just as registration was opening. It conveniently stopped at 5pm, so we dried off our equipment and finished setting everything up, delaying the Kids Race by 20 minutes.

The sun and heat thoroughly dried most of the course by the time the Men's C's started. So with 105 racers not discouraged by the previous rain, racing on the new trails, Chuck from Full Cycle still handing out Bratwursts and hot dogs, it was a good Wednesday. We also had plenty of prizes and stickers on hand from IMBA who generously donated to our cause, along with some more prizes from Justin's and Mix1.

We've got the results posted. There were a couple of notable absences leading to some big changes in the overall standings. Cade Mead now claims 2nd over the missing Joe Goodacre in the Kids Standings, Ksenia Lepikhina's 2nd place finish behind Nicole Duke allowed her to make up a lot of ground on Erin Huck, who missed the Women's A's race. Brian Alders jumped past both Mike West and Brady Kappius, picking up his second win of the series on Wednesday.

Low turnout in week 4

The longest day of the year was a hot one, so maybe the temperatures scared off a few racers. Perhaps it was the Wednesday practice crit near IBM that took a few racers away. Perhaps its vacation time. We still had 104 racers show up, about 40 less than last week.

On the plus side, word of the Short Track Series is definitely spreading around. Of the 104 racers, we had 43 new faces! We also love the photographers and videographers that keep coming out to the races. Check out last night's Women's A race. I also believe I saw at least one helmet cam at the race. Hopefully we'll see that video soon too.

As for Wednesday's results, check them out here. The overall standings are updated too. We always appreciate feedback, so be sure to let us know if we made any mistakes in the results.

Also, what did you think of the long course? Fun? Challenging? Too long? How about the short lap to start the race? We figured that would help space out the riders enough before the technical stuff began. We did have a little mixup with the large Men's B field, who ended up doing 2 short laps before starting the full course, but it seemed to work out anyway.

There has been some darker news lately in the cycling community:

"Rich Miles was in an extemely severe bicycle accident on Friday [June 17] on peak to peak. Many broken bones, lung punctured. Operation today [June 22]. Vehicle that caused it left scene. Sue Ann Miles wants to get postings on all bicycle club websites. There were witnesses on bikes. In panic at time Sue Ann did not get names. Please help her. Please email her for details. Her e-mail is samiles@qwest.net"

3 races down, 8 to go

It was a scorcher on Wednesday, with the sun beating down an intense 85 degrees, and still 145 of you showed up for some sweet and entirely injury-free racing. We had a special guest in town too, a big thanks goes out to the East Coast's Bruce Dickman for announcing all evening!

We had a little difficulty sorting some of the results, particularly the Men's B's, so check out Wendesday's results here, and let us know if something's a little off. We've corrected a couple of issues from last week in the standings.

It looks like in Margel Abel's absence, Erin Huck extended her lead in the Women's A's overall, though Nicole Duke ran away with Wednesday's race, a good 12 seconds over Cait Vestal in 2nd. The standings in all of the other categories are really tight, as Brady Kappius and Mike West continue alternating wins. 8 races to go, and anything can happen. We'll see you at the research park next week!

Race #2 in the books!

After a great turnout last week, another 149 racers . This included a bunch of new faces like Joe Goodacre, who was crushing it in the kids race. The question will be can he catch Oliver Hart and Cade Mead, who are currently sitting 1-2 in the overall, just as they were at the end of the 2010 series.
The big kids course featured a tricky hairpin and a bit of a cliff on the back side. Our medic on hand saw a couple of crashes, scraped elbows and knees. The clouds rolling through in the evening just intensified the racing, it seeemd everyone was going all out.

Erin Huck took the win in the Women's A race over CU Cycling's Women's Coach Margell Abel. History seems to repeat itself, as they are now 1-2 in the overall, just as they ended last season.

5 of the Men's A racers were flying through the course! By the end, Brady Kappius just edged out last week's winner Mike West. Mike still has the edge on Brady in the overall though. Last year's winner, Bryan Alders is close behind in 3rd.

The rainy season has passed, and the trails are dry. So CU's Summer Short Track Series has finally begun! And what a way to begin, with a whopping 154 racers, including 20 wicked fast kids!

As always, Chuck from Full Cycle was out grilling hot dogs and brats, competing with the Boulder Junior Cycles tent with their hot dogs and biker-friendly (healthy) cookies. Dave Wright was on hand photographing the Women's A and Men's A fields. Check out some sweet photos here. Thanks Dave!

We still have a few bugs to work out, so let us know if there are any corrections.
Additionally we had advertised hosting girls Juniors with the Women's B's, and boys Juniors with the Men's C's, but ended up racing all juniors together with Women's B's - the way we have normally done it in the past. We apologize to the juniors who missed the women's B start and raced in the C's instead.

We also started the single speed racers 30 seconds after the Men's B race. On that long course, several of the single speeders caught up and jumped right in with the B's, with a few passing more than half of the B field. Let us know either in comments or emails how you felt it went, and which style you'd prefer. How should we mix the juniors? Should single speeders just start with the B's, 30 seconds ahead, or 30 seconds behind?

Canceled again

Well, the weather is a little better this week, but the trails are still too muddy. So rather than race and potentially destroy the trails, the May 25 race is canceled. If you preregistered for today, we'll transfer those to next week. keep your fingers crossed that this weather will improve so we can get this series started. See you next week (we hope).

Aren't April shower's supposed to bring May flowers? Seems like that's changed to May showers and June Flowers...

From last night's rain, continued through this morning, trail conditions are not looking good at all. Add to that the expected afternoon thunderstorms, we unfortunately have to CANCEL SHORT TRACK TONIGHT (May 18).

We're definitely getting antsy for some mid-week racing. Hopefully the weather will turn favorable for next week.

...And with the great weather and longer daylight means CU Cycling Short Track is back! We'll have the usual categories, starting with the Kids Race. Junior Girls will be racing with Women's B's, but scored separately. Similarly Junior Boys will be with Men's C's. We are undecided if we'll have a separate Single-Speed category racing with the Men's B's. Let us know your opinion in the comments.

We're looking to make this the best Short Track series yet, with plenty of prizes, a dedicated kids course, merchandise primes every week, an overall series payout, and...wait for it...
...and online pre-registration, courtesy of PreRace.com! Registration will be $13 on line and $15 on site, or $147 for all summer.

So get pumped, spread the word, prep the kids, and register now!

Our series finished up yesterday, after 11 days of racing (only 2 cancelled on account of rain). You can check out yesterday's results here, with the Overall standings updated here.

Over the 11 races, with 7 different categories (Kids, Juniors, Women's A and B, and Men's A, B and C), there ended up being 44 different people winning at least one race, and 90 different racers found their way on to the podium. So there was always some intense action at our races, wins were never guaranteed. Consistently good performance seemed to be the name of the game for our series winners. A big congratulations goes out to our series winners:

Kids: Oliver Hart
Juniors: Jack Tanner
Women B: Deidre Garvey
Women A: Erin Huck
Men C: Ken Kreidl
Men B: Rick Emerson
Men A: Bryan Alders

Bryan Alders and Erin Huck tied for the most number of wins this summer, with 6 each. The A categories had some fierce competitions, as both Alders and Huck won the series by less than 200 points. For the Women B category, attendance and consistancy mattered more than winning. Deidre Garvey never got the victory, but she was usually in the top 4 of every race. Her persistance and reliability resulted in the Summer Series Overall victory, which is an even more sweet reward.

We are happy to see so many kids interested in mountain biking. Over the course of the series, 55 different children competed.

The Short Track Series is a huge fundraiser for the CU Cycling team, so we REALLY appreciate everyone who came out. We want to thank Full Cycle as well for supplying the truck to post results on, and even moreso for the hot dogs and burgers they graceously supply week after week. It's been a fun summer. We'll see you again next summer!

It's hard to believe the 2010 series is nearing its end. After weather shutting down last week's short track, get the angst out this Wednesday. Being the final race this summer, we've got a great new course planned, we'll have awards and prizes, and of course Full Cycle will be on hand with the grill going.

July 21 Results Posted

Check 'em out here. With Brady Kappius and Colby Pearce missing this week, Bryan Alders boosted his lead in the Men's A's. Erin Huck was also missing from the Women's A race, allowing Margel Abel to seriously close the gap in the overall with her 2nd place finish. The standings for Women's B's is also getting close, as Phoebe Erdman's third place finish helped her close on overall leader Diedre Garvey, who finished 4th. Will the remaining 3 races be enough for Phoebe to make up another 50 points to win the series, or will Diedre hold her off?
Meanwhile, Rick Emerson's 2nd place finish on Wednesday secured his victory in the Men's B series (though showing up on the final day will be useful for prize distribution and podium pictures and such). The fight for 2nd is very much alive though, with Seth Smekel and Jusin Green separated by only 5 points. Todd Saveland and Tim Ackerman are currently tied for 2nd in the Men's C's overall after last week's race. So there's definitely still some fierce racing to be seen in these last few weeks of racing.

The full results from last Wednesdya have been posted. Ksenia Lepikhina beat out Phoebe Erdman in the Women's B's last Wednesday, closing in the Phoebe's 2nd place in the overall series. Cloe Foresman showed up for the Women's A's, the 2nd time this series, and also marking her second victory. Erin Huck still has a strong lead in the overall though. Rick Emerson continues to run away with the overall in Men's B's. And Bryan Alders expanded his narrow lead over Brady Kappius, the two finished 1st and 3rd respectively.

A small chance of rain this week could make for a muddy fun time. See you all Wednesday!

Short Track 6

Ksenia Lepikhina has now won 2 Women B short tracks in a row. If this keeps up, she might be able to catch Deidre Garvey for the overall points lead. Bryan Alders took back his top podium spot last week in the Men's A's over 2nd place Brady Kappius. These two have been neck and neck all season, making for some exiting racing to watch. Erin Huck continued to expand her lead for the overall in Women's A's. In the Juniors category, an absent Niklas Scheiling allowed Jack Tanner to take the lead in the overall with his 3rd place finish on Wednesday.

Short Track 5

The action for the overall is heating up in the Mens A's - Brady Kappius won in the Men's A's for the second time in a row. Brian Alders' lead for the overall is now only 10 points. Meanwhile, Erin Huck extended her lead in the Women's A's. We've had several new racers in the Men's C's, and a few new faces in the Men's B's. Cesar Ochoa had his first race of the series, racing in the Junior's category and taking 4th, and Kahill Bailey took 5th in the Kids race, also his first time this season at CU Short Track. Look out for these kids during the rest of the series, they mean business.

Short Track #4

Sorry for the delay in getting the results up to you. On the plus side, my research group flew our aircraft near some tornadoes this week to collect some novel wind and temperature data, in the hopes of improving tornado warning systems.

Short track this week sadly saw only 8 Women's A racers. Erin Huck was missing, meaning her lead in the series is cut down. Oliver Hart and Cane Mead continue a fierce battle in the Kid's series standings. Brady Kappius finally overtook Bryan Alders, winning the Men's A's, though Alders still has a decent lead in the overall.

Still, Bryan Alders is controlling the Men's A's, and Erin Huck is still holds the the overall lead in the Women's A's, but it was her Tokyo Joe's teammate Chloe Foresman taking the win this week.

Short Track #2

The second week of CU Short Track brought more racers, especially in the Men's B's and Women's A's. Bryan Alders continues undefeated in the Men's A's, with Brady Kappius close behind in both races. Meanwhile, we have some battling for first in the Women's A's between Nicole Duke and Erin Huck. Check out week 2 results here. First Race Down

Despite some looming clouds, the weather stayed perfect for the series opener on Wednesday. Full Cycle brought the grill and the bratwursts, CU brought the music and other necessities, and you brought your bikes. Turnout was on the small side for most races. Kids had a great showing, with 12 youngins racing, and Men's A's had a solid 23 racers. PreRace.com was on hand to take plenty of photos, posted in their Photos section. We have also put up results, posted in their usual spot, just click on the date on the race calendar to the right. The total standings will be updated every week as well. Send us an email or a comment if you notice any errors - parsing handwriting and typing rarely goes perfectly.

Some notes for next time:

Bring your name plate again for next week, new numbers cost extra.

If you're doubling up on races, the second race is only $6.

We'd like you to bring your license every week even if we already have you in our system - it helps us out at registration.

You only have to fill out the paperwork / releases once this summer. So if you filled out the forms from racing this past Wednesday, there's no need to fill them out again, you're set for all summer.

Hey everyone! This summer has been fantastic at CU, and last Wednesday was a great way to cap it off - a grueling long course with some fast straights and very sharp turns, a BBQ, and a loud and roudy audiance. Results are up for both Wednesday's results and the Overall Standings. We want to thank everyoe who came out and raced, as your entry fees will help send the CU Cycling Team to Nationals. In addition, an incredible thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who helped set up and clean up the course, handle registration, provide medical support, provide hot dogs and brats (Full Cycle), as well as the extensive prize list we've had all summer.

August 5 results

Only 1 race is left in the summer series! After last week, Mike West has a lock on first in the Men's A's, but 2nd is still a tight race. First is almost sealed, but not guaranteed, in the Women's A's for Becca Blay - she simply needs to finish on Wednesday. Again there's a battle for 2nd. It's still anybody's game in Women's B's for the overall. The results from last Wednesday can be found here with the total standings in the usual place. Come out on Wednesday to celebrate the final race of the season, and a very successful summer series with us. We're hoping for the biggest turnout yet to make it an epic night and end to the series.

After that little delay, we have the results tabulated here. There was an issue with the recording of the Kids race, and regrettably do not have their results. With Colby Pearce at the Breck Epic, Mike West has taken over the lead in the Men's As. Becca Blay had a great performance, taking the lead from Molly Throdahl in the Woman's As.

July 1 Results

Results have been tallied for the beautiful July 1 race. Becca Blay has closed the gap 22 points to Women's A points leader Molly Throdahl; only 14 points now separates the two. Action in the Men's A's is heating up a lot too, with Mike West gaining 14 points on leader Colby Pierce, who now leads with a narrow 4-point margin. Full results can be found here. The total standings have also been updated.

Run-in with the law

The weather held up great for the July 1st race, and again a lot of people came out to both race and watch. It was a fun night, though some cops had some words with us at CU. For a number of reasons it is illegal to have alcohol at these events. It takes a lot of effort and support to put on this summer series, including the support of the city. So when you do come out to race, cheer or both, please leave the beer at home. It will still be waiting for you cold and refreshing in your refridgerator.

June 24th

We had a little rain for the Kids and Women B / Junior's race. But after that it was clear skies, warm sun, cheddar brats and hot dogs. The course weaved back and forth with several challenging hills and a couple of slick corners, making the race about technical skill rather than blunt speed and power. The results have been tabulated (here) and overall standings are at the same location.

Sorry for the long delay, the main guy who handles results was out of town all weekend. But finally, results are posted here. Standings have been updated too. In the Women's A's, Sarah Altschuler of Walt Works and Molly Throdal of Sports Garage have a fierce back-and-forth going, with Molly holding a small margin in the leaders spot. Meanwhile in the Men's A's, though Bryan Alders (Mona Vie) has yet to get the win, his consistent top 3 finishes keep him ahead of Colby Pearce (Michelob). Wednesday should be hot and sunny, with some fierce competition. See you at 4:45.

Finally, it seems the weather will stay on our side all night. After 2 weeks of bad weather, everyone is antsy to race today. It should be an exciting evening of short track tonight. See you at the course in just a little bit.

This rain storm was very sudden and caught us by surprise. And it seems that more storms are on the way. We have decided to cancel tonights race again. Hopefully weather will comply better next week.

May 27th Results

Wednesday's rain narrowly avoided this week's short track, though there were some mud puddles. Many racers came out, some enjoying the mud but most hoping to avoid it as much as possible. To add some fun we decided to have mud primes: whichever rider made the biggest splash/mess in the puddle right before the finish line would win, based on the audience's cheering. Many riders got their feet wet, legs covered, and spray in the face. One racer actually wheelied through the mud. Full Cycle was again on hand, demoing bikes and grilling Dogs and Brats. You can find Wednesday's results here. We will have full standings up soon, though I'm sure you can figure it out by looking at last week's results too. The first day of the short track series saw a huge turnout! Thanks to everyone who helped set up and clean up the course, a big thanks to our master grillers at the start/finish, our sponsors for providing prizes and helping out with equipment, and to everyone who showed up to race! CU Cycling Fundraiser

Hello to all you short track fans that are still checking the page! We hope the collegiate MTB season went well for those of you still in school. For those of you who aren't in school, we are hoping you are enjoying the wonderful fall weather and the cyclo-cross season!

We do have a fundraiser for CU Cycling coming up at the beginning of November which we would like to personally invite all of you to. Hudz and Miles Ahead Events are bringing the ROCKY MOUNTAIN BIKE SHOW to CU November 1 and 2. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. they will be showcasing some of the best frame builders around the country as well as bringing the newest components and accessories from Interbike in Vegas.

The admission to the event is only $5 and it is definitely family friendly. But the really cool part... A PORTION OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO CU CYCLING!!

So after the cross races (the Boulder Cup and the Redline Cup), raking the lawn, or even after your training ride, make sure to stop by the Glenn Miller Ballroom in the University Memorial Center (UMC) and check out the Rocky Mountain Bike Show!

OVERALL SERIES STANDINGS

The series leaders in each category have been racing great all season. But don't forget that only THE TOP 7 RESULTS of each rider will be counted for the overall series winner. That means that riders that have only competed in 6 events so far can earn up to 200 points next week with a win whereas racers that have already raced 7 races can only improve their points with the difference between their lowest points earned so far in the race. This should make for some really interesting competitive racing next week! Be sure to come out and watch as a few of the categories will only be separated by a couple of points. Its sure to be a "Wednesday Night Worlds" event! We also have some great series prizes to give out next week!

June 18th Results Posted!

We had nearly 150 racers AGAIN this week. Thank you to all of the racers for making the CU Cycling Short Track races so successful! The Short Track Crew is pumped to see so many people out racing every week.

Thank you again to all of our sponsors for supporting the racers in all categories. We are stoked to give out some awesome prizes to first, second and third places!

For next week, the Juniors will be racing in a category by themselves as we had a HUGE turnout this past Wednesday. For the safety of Women's B and Junior racers, we are dividing the races. Junior racing will now begin at 5 p.m. sharp. Women's B race will follow directly after at the scheduled time of 5:15 p.m.

Also, we have formed a partnership with BMA (Boulder Mountain bike Alliance) so be sure to check out their tent next week.

JUNE 11TH RESULTS POSTED!

Wind, wind and more wind. Setting up the course this week was a bit of a challenge as the Boulder Valley saw winds near 40 miles per hour. But nonetheless, the short track crew pulled off yet another race despite inclement weather.

Everyone rode hard through the wind and we had close to 150 race entries this week!

We had a guest send off for the Men's A race from Full Cycle's co-owner, Kevin Kelly.
